Latest alleged video of the game sees the hacker autographing a wall
The crypto-peddling hacker group who leaked footage of GTA 6 earlier this week appear to have access to a playable version of Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive's forthcoming open world game, if recent videos are any indication.
A new clip from the hacker group, Cyberleek, has surfaced on Reddit, watermarked with a QR code and a call to buy cryptocurrency. I'm not going to link to it, but here's a quick description. It shows a player flying a blue single-seater plane over what appears to be the new Grand Theft Auto's sunny Vice City setting, pausing the action to change radio stations. After a minute or two, the video switches to apparent footage of protagonist Jason shooting a wall with a rifle, spelling out "Leek" in bullet holes. Which obviously indicates that the hackers aren't just sharing around stolen videos: they've got their hands on a playable build.
Alongside this week's vids, the Cyberleek group have published a manifesto in which they characterise themselves as consumer rights activists, raging against digital preorders, singleplayer DLC, and always-online game shutdowns. As the organisers of Stop Killing Games have noted, this feels like a cheesy ploy to drum up cryptocurrency donations by cashing in on some trending gamer righteousness.
I would steer clear! If you have pocket money to spare, maybe spend it on the former Rockstar workers who are embroiled in legal action with Rockstar over claims of union-busting and confidentiality breaches.
The Cyberleek hacks are shaping up to be Rockstar and Take-Two's most severe data breach since the release of around 80 highly work-in-progress clips of GTA 6 back in 2022. Assuming Cyberleek's videos are legitimate, it seems likely the build in question is an older version, albeit a relatively complete one. As such, we should be wary of making any inferences about the finished game from the footage.
I hold out the faintest of suspicions that the whole thing is a massive wind-up. Perhaps somebody fed a generative AI a million GTA 5 streams and had it cough up a dodgy prototype? Rockstar and Take-Two have so far been totally silent on the subject, though they appear to be acting behind the scenes - in the course of my writing this piece, the clips posted on Reddit are being removed.
I've mailed them another request for comment. A Netflix screening of GTA 6 is due to broadcast on 27th August.
