The wait is almost over for Grand Theft Auto fans: GTA 6 is due out on Nov. 19. It's been more than ten years since the last mainline GTA game (Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013), and fans have been eagerly anticipating a return to Vice City. Few games have drummed up as much anticipation as GTA 6 has, so some may think releasing a game in the same month — let alone the same week — would be toying with fate. But one game, set to release on Nov. 12, is ready to stand up against the GTA hype.
Metaphor: ReFantazio, an award-winning RPG from the creators of the Persona series, is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 on Nov. 12 — the same day that digital preloads of GTA 6 become available.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Metaphor: ReFantazio is a port of Studio Zero's award-winning 2024 RPG. Upon its initial release, Metaphor: ReFantazio received international praise, including Best Roleplaying Game of the Year at the 2024 Game of the Year Awards and honors at the 2025 Japan Game Awards. The game holds a Metacritic score of 94 and was named Game of the Year by major outlets, including IGN and GameSpot.
For those of you who haven't played Metaphor: ReFantazio, it is set in the United Kingdom of Euchronia. The story opens with the assassination of the current king, and determining the next king isn't simply a matter of passing the torch. It calls for a Royal Tournament to be held, in which the next ruler will be chosen by the people. That's where you enter, playing as the game's main protagonist, a young boy named Will.
Polygon writer Chelsea Stark, in her 2024 review of the game, described Metaphor: ReFantazio as a "finely crafted triumph." "Every piece of Metaphor: ReFantazio’s art and visual design feels high touch. Characters stride about in brilliant outfits that highlight their tribe’s angel wings or dog tails. There are three styles of character animation — in-world animation, cel-shaded conversation, then a few fully animated sections to highlight the most show-stopping moments — and they’re all gorgeous," Stark wrote.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is available for $39.99 from Nintendo's website, and a demo of the game is already available to play.
