Nissan's NISMO nameplate has historic ties to motorsports and high-performance street cars. While the latest addition won't rank among the greats, it might make a daily commute a little more exciting. That's because the 2026 Nissan Leaf just got the NISMO treatment, and it's on sale today—if you live in Japan.
The JDM Leaf NISMO is available with two front-wheel-drive powertrains: a 174-hp B5 version and a 214-hp B7. The latter setup is the same one sold on our shores, and it sent the version we tested to 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds. Nissan says that while the NISMO treatment doesn't add power, the electric motors have been specially tuned to provide a more responsive punch. Nissan also claims the powertrain tweaks make the car "feel lighter," albeit without providing specifics. Meanwhile, a 2026 Leaf Platinum+ tipped our scales at 4367 pounds—or 574 pounds heavier than the Chevy Bolt, our 2026 EV of the Year.
The Leaf's NISMO makeover does include several chassis enhancements, including exclusive dampers, stiffer suspension components, and a revised steering system. The sporty EV also rides on special 19-inch Enkei wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires. Even the sportiest Leaf isn't likely to see many racetracks, but the improvements in the handling department should make windy backroads more enjoyable.
Nissan also upped the ante on the Leaf's traditional drive modes. Sport is renamed NISMO and is said to deliver more linear acceleration, while Standard and Eco modes received subtle tunes to make the Leaf feel zippier. Nissan tuned the paddle shifters to be more engaging too.
The NISMO model has a wider, lower stance than the standard Leaf, and its bodywork is adorned with subtle aerodynamic improvements. The front bumper's corners are modified to help direct airflow to the sides of the car, and the rear bumper features a boat-hull-shaped diffuser; a larger ducktail spoiler extends from the rear hatch. NISMO models are offered in the same four colors as the standard Leaf, but they also come in two variations of NISMO Stealth Gray, which is exclusive to NISMO models. A thin red line runs along the bottom edge of the car, and NISMO styling cues appear on the bumpers, hood, and mirror caps.
Inside, the NISMO-spec Leaf features the same thin red line stretching along the dashboard. The specialty branding can be found on the power button and instrument cluster, and the steering wheel is upgraded to a faux leather wrap with red stitching and a red center marker. Standard seats come with the NISMO logo on the headrest and red perforations, while optional Recaro seats wear the signature red along their edges.
Three Leaf NISMO models are currently for sale in Japan, with the B5-equipped trim starting at the equivalent of $40,458. The mightier B7 variant starts at roughly $42,608, and fitting it with the Recaros pushes the price to about $44,294. The higher-performance Leafs are only available in Japan at the moment, and while it's possible that Nissan eventually offers them in the United States, we won't hold our breath.
