Phillies Rule Out New Pitcher After Season-Ending Injury

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to navigate the stretch run of the season with one of baseball's deepest pitching staffs, a designed strength that would likely have to overshadow the offense if the team is to capture a World Series title.

That alone makes every injury throughout the system significant, particularly when it involves a pitcher who had recently emerged as a potential option for the major league club. While the Phillies have been linked to outside pitching help ahead of the trade deadline, one internal candidate has now been ruled out for the season.

On Friday, the organization placed RHP Levi Stoudt on the full-season injured list, according to his official MiLB transactions page.

The move effectively rules out Stoudt as a late-season reinforcement for Philadelphia as he was building momentum with his hometown franchise. And the setback comes after less than 20 games in the organization.

"The 28-year-old grew up a Phillies fan and cheered from the stands for many IronPigs and Double-A Reading games throughout his childhood,” Phillies Nation’s Dan Sullivan wrote. “He always dreamt of taking the field for Lehigh Valley one day, and now seven years into his professional career, his wish has been granted."

But instead of continuing that storybook return, Stoudt faces an extended absence that removes him from the Phillies' list of potential call-up candidates for the remainder of 2026 and much of 2027.

The injury had been developing for several weeks before Stoudt was officially placed on the full-season injured list.

“The reliever said he felt soreness in his right elbow after throwing the most he's thrown in a series all year, and he was subsequently kept out of last week's series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,” Sullivan reported when the issue popped up.

The placement on the full-season injured list now confirms that the organization expects the recovery to extend through the rest of the year.

For the Phillies, the timing further emphasizes why the front office continues to evaluate pitching depth both internally and externally. Clubs with championship aspirations can never have too many healthy arms, and Stoudt's season-ending setback removes another experienced option from the organizational picture as Philadelphia prepares for the final months of the season.

The Phillies’ need for both starting and bullpen arms has been apparent in the second half of the season, and the team will be weighing its options for external reinforcements ahead of the trade deadline. The loss of Stoudt did nothing to reduce the need for a significant pitching trade in just a few days.
