Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett will be sidelined for at least the next four weeks after being placed on injured reserve with a knee injury that requires surgery.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year was limited by the issue during training camp and admitted following Thursday's defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne that it had proven more restrictive than first thought.
The Ringer's Tom Pelissero was first to report the news on Sunday as the Rams prepare for an extended period without their marquee addition.
Garrett was traded to the Rams by the Cleveland Browns in the blockbuster deal of the NFL offseason, fresh from breaking the all-time single-season sack record in 2025.

"I don't really [have a timeline] yet," head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday. "It's all contingent upon how do things go today. You feel good about it.
"But I think it'd be unfair to him or really just without having the totality of all the information, to put any sort of timeline on it. We know that he'll be available in four weeks potentially, so we'll just take that a day at a time.
"Honestly, after I talked with him after the game, after I'd spoken with you guys and just seeing just how he felt. You look at it, we thought it was something that we'd be able to kinda manage. That wasn't necessarily the case.
"So having that evidence and being able to say, 'What's the next right thing?' It was right after the game, just in terms of listening to how he felt, how he was able to impact the game and even just, like, what you guys saw, with how limited we had to be with him. Obviously, we thought we were doing the right thing, but, in hindsight, you'll always be able to learn from it."
His arrival was followed by the shock return of Aaron Donald, who stunned the league by coming out of retirement to team up with Garrett at the forefront of the Rams' defense.
Donald was absent in Melbourne in Week One as he works his way back into full football shape.
Garrett is due to miss games against the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills over the next four weeks. The earliest Garrett would be eligible to return is against the Arizona Cardinals in Week Six.
His introduction in Los Angeles had seen Sean McVay's side, already led by MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford, enter the season widely considered as Super Bowl favourites.
