If you put dinosaurs in your movie, I’m going to show up. Having grown up with Jurassic Park, I’ve been a dinosaur nerd since I was a kid and I still get excited for any chance I have to see dinosaurs on the big screen. Nowadays, that’s usually in the Jurassic World franchise, but in three weeks, another movie featuring dinosaurs is coming to theaters, and it looks like a lot of fun — or at least like it will tide me over until the next Jurassic World installment.

What is The End of Oak Street?

The End of Oak Street is an upcoming science-fiction film written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) and produced by J.J. Abrams. It stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as the parents of a family whose entire neighborhood — including all the people, houses, and streets — is suddenly transported back to the age of the dinosaurs. How they got there is not revealed in the trailers, though one of the kids in the family makes mention of “weird lights” outside their home the night before and a strange, spherical object appears in one of the trailers.

The trailers also have a light tone to them, with The Flintstones theme song featured in one of them and Billy Joel’s “My Life” in another, which is set to people running for their lives. While the movie doesn’t look comedic in any way, it appears like it’s a fun action flick that makes great use of its premise.

How does The End of Oak Street compare to the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World movies?

One thing that has me excited about The End of Oak Street is that it’s a different setting than the Jurassic World franchise. While I always go into those movies excited to see dinosaurs, the fact that nearly all of them have an island setting can make things repetitive. With The End of Oak Street, since the entire neighborhood goes back in time, we get to see dinosaurs roaming around suburban streets and people boarding up their homes to protect themselves. We never really get to see those things in the Jurassic World franchise.

I’m also generally intrigued by the mystery of the premise for The End of Oak Street. Did they go back in time because of some alien technology or a government experiment gone wrong? Or is it something more fantasy-based? I really want to know, though I hope whatever the reveal is comes second to all the “running around with dinosaurs” action.

What dinosaurs are in The End of Oak Street?End of Oak Street

As with any dinosaur movie, I’m excited to see which dinosaurs are in it. According to Dinopedia, confirmed species from the trailers include Allosaurus, Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Garjainia, and Ankylosaurus, along with other dinosaurs whose species are unclear. That lineup is especially exciting since we haven’t seen a lot of those dinosaurs in the various Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies. It's also pleasing to see that many of them have feathers, a scientifically accurate detail that’s been mostly absent from the Jurassic movies.

When does The End of Oak Street arrive in theaters?

The End of Oak Street will arrive in theaters on August 14.
