The Content SEO Manager: How a brand-new role took over content marketing [Study]

Categories: marketing-seo

In 2026, companies are hiring content marketers who can own visibility in search, navigate AI-powered discovery, and prove that every piece of content is generating business results.

Meet the Content SEO Manager. This role did not show up in our 2023 research. Now, it accounts for 20% of all content marketing listings in the US, tying Content Creator as the highest-volume title in the market.

It was the standout finding of our broader study of 8,000 content marketing job listings earlier this year. So we decided to look at it on its own — analyzing 1,002 Content SEO Manager listings for skills, responsibilities, AI expectations, and work arrangements.

Methodology

We analyzed 1,002 Content SEO Manager job listings from Indeed.com (US) as of April 2026 and compared our findings with insights from our previous job market study.

We deduplicated overlapping postings and categorized roles into two groups:

For each listing, we extracted insights like required skills, salary data, and more.

Key findings

1. A brand-new title now leads the market

Content marketing roles in 2026 are clustering at two extremes: execution-heavy creators and senior performance owners. The Content SEO Manager sits squarely in the middle, combining both.

Three years ago, it did not appear in our tracked title categories at all.

By the end of 2025, the role accounted for 20% of all content marketing listings, tying Content Creator.

It is a new kind of job built around the convergence of content production, organic search, and AI-driven discovery. Companies need someone who can connect the dots and create content that brings in AI visibility, traffic, customers, and leads.

2. Project management and cross-team collaboration lead the top required skills

The soft skills profile for the Content SEO Manager is consistent across both seniority levels. Project management, collaboration, and communication are the defining non-degree requirements.

3. Storytelling has overtaken writing as a senior requirement

The marketing skills profile for Content SEO Managers shows that this role has moved beyond content production, especially at the senior level.

SEO and analytics dominate as the top marketing skills across both groups.

What’s even more curious: Storytelling outranks writing by more than two to one for senior listings.

4. SEO leads the tech skills; senior roles lean conversion, non-senior roles lean publishing and front-end

SEO is required in over 59% of listings at both levels. Beyond that, the tech skills profile diverges: Senior roles also prioritize conversion optimization and analytics, while non-senior roles add publishing platforms and front-end skills.

5. The Content SEO Manager role owns the full content loop, with performance measurement at the top

The responsibilities in Content SEO Manager listings span the full lifecycle of content, from keyword research and content production through to performance tracking and workflow automation.

Data analysis ranks first at both levels, and editing, execution, and SEO execution are all present throughout.

6. The role is largely defined by AI literacy

In our broader content marketing study, 34% of senior listings mentioned AI. For the Content SEO Manager, that number is 43%.

More significantly, 11% of senior listings specifically require knowledge of AI Search, SGE, or AEO, compared to 2% in the overall senior content market.

7. Marketing background, high degree requirements, and technical skills on the rise

Marketing is the most commonly specified degree field at both levels, followed by communication and business. Journalism, a traditional pathway into content roles, ranks near the bottom.

At the senior level, technical backgrounds are beginning to appear, reflecting the analytical and automation demands of the role.

What this data tells us about the future of content

The Content SEO Manager emerged because the job of getting content found became more complex than ever.

It brings together what used to require a content strategist, an SEO specialist, a data analyst, and increasingly an AI search expert, into a single function with clear performance accountability.

What the data reflects is not just a new title. It is a redefinition of content as a discipline: data-first, search-native, built for AI-powered discovery, and measured against business outcomes.

For anyone building toward this role, the data points to a clear profile:
