A powerful derecho ravaged parts of the Midwest on August 11, 2026. The storm was a massive complex that produced winds in excess of 100 miles per hour and several tornadoes. At least seven deaths have been attributed to the storms, and two weeks later, many people are still reeling from the storms and lack of power. Let’s explore these powerful types of storms and the complex web of human vulnerability playing out in the region.

What Happened?

“The derecho produced swaths of widespread 70 to locally 100+ mph straight-line winds across northeastern Illinois into northwestern Indiana that resulted in widespread wind damage across the south and southwest Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana,” according to the National Weather Service. “​A peak wind gust of 99 mph was recorded at Gary/Chicago International Airport…. 8 tornadoes were confirmed in the NWS Chicago area,” The NWS website went on to say. of responsibility from this event.

In addition to strong winds and tornadoes, the storms also produced baseball-sized hail in Stark County, Indiana, and flood-producing rainfall throughout the region. The National Weather Service did an excellent job forecasting the storms, but they were still very disruptive.

What Is A Derecho?

While people seem to understand risks associated with tornadoes, a derecho that can produce 100 mile per hour wind gusts not associated with a hurricane may be a foreign concept to many people. "A derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho" in English, or pronounced phonetically as "") is a widespread, severe windstorm that originates from a mid-latitude MCS that is driven by a cold pool and other possible internal forcing mechanisms," noted the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. An MCS is a mesoscale convective system, which is a type of organized set of storms. While damage from a derecho can be similar to a tornado, it is usually a result of “straight-line” wind damage along a path.

To be classified as a derecho, a very specific set of criteria must be met. “By definition, if the swath of wind damage extends at least 250 miles (about 400 kilometers) long, includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) along its length, with several, well-separated 75 mph (121 km/h) or greater gusts, and originates from an MCS that moves faster than the mean wind speed (thus being primarily cold pool driven), the event may be classified as a derecho,” The NOAA SPC page stated. New updates to the definition also includes specific radar-identified features like bow echoes and rear-inflow jets.

While many people think the term “derecho” is a new media-generated word, it has been around our meteorological community for decades. Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs first used the term in 1888. The University of Iowa professor published a research paper trying to distinguish damage from thunderstorm-related winds from rotational winds associated with tornadoes. The Spanish word translates to “straight or straight ahead.”

The Lingering Human Toll

I have written many times on this platform about compounding weather disasters, vulnerability, and resilience. I co-authored a recent national report detailing the complexity of weather hazards, sustained impacts to people, and response. Weather risk is generally a function four things:

  1. The actual hazard such as a derecho, hurricane, tornado or heatwave.
  2. Exposure to the hazard.
  3. Vulnerability or the degree of sensitivity to that exposure.
  4. Adaptive capacity or resilience to being exposed (i.e., the ability to bounce back over time).

Studies continue to show that everyone within a community can have the same degree of exposure to something like a derecho, but socio-economic factors strongly determine sensitivity and adaptive capacity. According to media reports, tens of thousands of people, for example, were still without power in places like Gary, Indiana. Research has consistently indicated that the most vulnerable communities after weather hazards are communities of color, the elderly, the poor, and children.

“Some families may remain without power until August 25. Think about what that means for a senior citizen living on a fixed income. The groceries they bought for the month are now spoiled, and they cannot afford to replace them, wrote Daniel Blackman, a former Presidential Appointee with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Blackman continued, ”People cannot charge their phones, check on family members or receive emergency information. Some cannot get to work. Others have lost wages because their jobs are closed. Medicine cannot be refrigerated. Medical equipment cannot be used. Small businesses are losing income every day…. This is not simply about the lights being out. People are hungry, isolated, afraid and running out of options." By the way, the prospect of summer heat is still with us too.

As we saw after Hurricane Katrina (2005) in New Orleans or Hurricane Maria (2017) in Puerto Rico, there are cascading impacts when power outages linger, as Blackman articulated. A 2026 National Academies report noted that extreme weather events are increasing in intensity and frequency. Communities will need to make infrastructure, social systems, and networks climate-resilient in a preemptive manner rather than the usual approach of putting bandages on after the events.
