WWE SummerSlam 2026 was a long time coming for Baron Corbin.

Just a few weeks ago, the man who previously spent 12 years in WWE made his triumphant return to the company after being released in late 2024. Corbin instantly had a target in mind, too, clobbering United States Champion and fan favorite Trick Williams upon his return to SmackDown.

Then, on last week’s SmackDown, Corbin attacked Williams in a post-SmackDown ambush, setting up a major US title match at WWE SummerSlam 2026.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just three weeks after his blockbuster WWE return, Baron Corbin is already the United States Champion. Again. The former Money in the Bank winner and now two-time US Champion defeated Trick Williams at WWE SummerSlam to capture the US title for the second time when an inadvertent distraction from Lil Yachty allowed Corbin to take advantage and hit the End of Days.

WWE SummerSlam 2026 Results: What’s Next For Trick Williams And Baron Corbin?

Williams’ United States title loss at SummerSlam may have actually been a blessing in disguise. After all, Williams is poised for bigger and better things.

Barely half a year into his main roster run, Williams has already established himself as one of WWE’s most must-see stars. As a result, it, in a way, felt as if he was already above SmackDown’s US title, a midcard championshipthat is, at best, the fourth most prestigious singles title in the men’s division.

At SummerSlam, WWE protected Williams in defeat when he lost to Corbin only thanks to an illegal shot with the title belt. That should tell you that Williams’ loss to the returning Corbin wasn’t much of a loss at all.

Given that Corbin recently returned to WWE and quickly built up some solid momentum, it was necessary for him to win the US Championship and cement himself as an upper midcarder again. Corbin’s victory over Williams now gives WWE the opportunity to move Williams up the card while building the upper midcard, where Corbin belongs, around the star formerly known as “The Lone Wolf.”

While Corbin and Williams may continue their feud post-SummerSlam for a brief time, WWE should keep the US title on Corbin and elevate Williams to the top of the card.
